Bees Lose Series Opener In Extra Innings

Peoria, IL (June 18, 2009) - The Burlington Bees began their final series of the first half with a 5-4 extra inning loss at Peoria. The Bees led by three going to the bottom of the seventh but could not hold on. Peoria scored the winning run in the tenth inning.
The Bees opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning. Jarrod Dyson led off with a single and then moved to third on consecutive wild pitches. Nick Van Stratten and Eric Hosmer were then walked to load the bases. Nick Francis hit a sacrifice fly to score Dyson, which was the Bees' first run of the day. After Van Stratten was caught stealing, David Wood singled to score Hosmer and the Bees led 2-0.
The Bees added to their lead with another run in the fourth inning. Chase Fontaine walked and then moved up to third on consecutive ground-outs. Dyson then singled to score Fontaine. Peoria scored one run in the fifth to get back within one run but the Bees got their three-run lead back in the seventh inning. Fernando Garcia was walked to lead the inning off. He moved to second on a Dyson base hit and then to third on a Fielder's Choice. Hosmer then hit a sacrifice fly to score Garcia and the Bees led 4-1. Peoria then scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to tie the game. The game went to extra innings. With one out in the tenth inning, Josh Vitters singled to right to score Drew Rundle from second to win the game for the Chiefs.
Mike Montgomery got the start for the Bees and pitched very well. In six innings, he allowed one run on two hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. He was in line for a victory when he left the contest. Riquy Pena pitched one inning allowing two runs on three hits. Blaine Hardy pitched the final 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He was charged with a blown save and took the loss to move to 3-3 on the season.
The Bees had ten hits in the game and outhit Peoria by one. Dyson went 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Fontaine had two hits in the game.
